The Importance of Improved Air Quality

When it comes to employee health and productivity, nothing is as important as good workplace air quality. Dust and other airborne particles can wreak havoc on the respiratory system – especially for people with health problems.

An even greater danger exists because industrial dust particles may be combustible, and these can cause life-threatening problems for workers who might inhale them. A workplace safety program must include safety standards and dust collection provisions.

Portable dust collection devices are very helpful, and they may work in different ways. Work place standards to prevent fires and maintain worker safety are high priority concerns.

In December of 2012, OSHA released their regulatory agenda, with the expectation that issues of greatest concern would be addressed in 2013. One of those high priorities is concern over combustible dust standards. But OSHA standards only go so far towards ensuring that work places have high quality air. Businesses must adopt their own dust standards to supplement OSHA requirements and regulations.

Dust removal systems reduce fire risk and protect employee health. The five ways dust collection systems trap dust are:

  1. electrostatic precipitators
  2. fabric filters
  3. inertial separators
  4. unit collectors
  5. wet scrubbers

In manufacturing facilities, an industrial vacuum may be the most effective way to remove the substantial amounts of dust and particulate that are created by the business. The vacuum is effective at improving air quality, and by extension, maintaining employee health.
