The Effects of Grain Dust: Like Asthma and Emphysema

The issues surrounding grain dust, in regard to lung health, make the presence of it more than a nuisance. Recent and historical studies show that extended exposure to grain dust puts those working near it at risk for serious respiratory problems.

In fact, subjects of the study that endured life-time periods of exposure to grain dust developed bronchoconstriction. Bronchoconstriction, which is the closure of the smooth muscles around the bronchial tubes, happens to also be brought on by asthma and emphysema.

Studies on the respiratory effects of exposure to grain dust have been conducted as early as the 1970’s, and farmers and grain dust elevator users have been mostly compliant. Just recently, however, the Farmers Cooperative was recently cited by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), for access grain dust accumulations in its elevators. In efforts to protect the workers of the cooperatives, OSHA fines were imposed.

Incidents such as these highlight the importance of implementing a sufficient dust-collection system, which would include a proficient industrial vacuum.
