Developing a dust prevention and control plan

Dust build up can cause a variety of problems; making the building look dirty and several allergy and health-related issues. Sit down and develop a dust prevention and control plan. This is very important to help prevent any future health problems.

Tackling dust problems is an everyday job and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality suggests planning ahead to keep these problems under control. Here are a few steps to develop a dust prevention and control plan:

  • Identify all dust emission sources by conducting a search through your building finding access to the outdoors and heavy traffic areas. Make a map and mark these areas.
  • Determine where to prevent and control dust for each potential source. It may be necessary to use an industrial vacuum.
  • Determine how often you need to review the source and correct the problems.
  • Record all prevention successes and other dust control activities. Determine if the dust collectors you are using are actually being effective.
  • Monitor all dust control activities on a regular basis.
