At Least Two Million Die Each Year From Polluted Air

In July 2013, CNN reported that a just released environmental study reported that more than two million across the globe die each year from the effects of polluted air. Jason West is a study co-author of the research published in the journal of Environmental Research Letters. He commented:

“Outdoor air is an important problem and among the most important environmental risk factors for health.”

But the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the number is more than double the study findings. It is their belief that 4.6 million people die each year from causes directly attributable to air pollution.

Other studies are just as glum. For instance, the British medical journal, The Lancet, reported that as air pollution increases so does the incidence of heart failure.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Science in a discussion of air pollution problems in Northern China suggested that life expectancy there is lower by 5.5 years due to dirty air.

The World Health Organization concluded that in the European Union a sizeable decrease in life expectancy caused by air pollution amounted to 8.6 months.

Problematically, dirty air does not stay outdoors and air pollution occurs inside homes and offices. The problem in United States workplaces is so severe that it affects employee health and productivity.

One California company is devoted to combating polluted air in the workplace. Ryvac Engineering Company of Pomona, California designs and manufacturers many solutions for making the indoor air quality more pure. For companies with special needs they will design and build equipment if an off the shelf solution cannot be used.

Clean indoor air is not only important to worker’s health and productivity. It also lengthens the life of equipment, reduces maintenance costs for the work place, and reduces the likelihood of fire and explosions.
