5 Easy Steps to Reduce Air Pollution

Life can get so busy that it’s easy to overlook all of the conveniences that society takes for granted, never stopping to think that they are major pollutants. Even basic household cleaning and personal hygiene products that are routinely found in medicine, bathroom or kitchen cabinets are pollutants that contribute to the air quality problems everywhere. If you are looking for a way to reduce air pollution, some simple changes will help you and your family reduce your carbon footprints.

#1 Start by Saving Energy at Home

Avoid leaving lights on when you’re not in the room or at home. Don’t leave televisions or computers on when not in use, and don’t leave these things plugged in if they’re not in use. Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs. They’re more expensive, but they last longer and use less energy.

#2 Purchase an Automatic Thermostat

An automatic thermostat will allow you to set your heat or air conditioner to different temperatures for night and day, or even when you’re not at home. Then you can have the comfortable conditions when you need them and when you’re at home without having to waste energy to make that happen. Get your heating and air conditioning systems checked regularly.

#3 Reduce Wasteful Packaging

Whenever possible, purchase things that are minimally packaged or packaged in recycled materials. If you do purchase packaged things, recycle the packaging, and recycle plastic, paper, and anything else that is recyclable.

#4 Avoid Wasteful Driving

Arrange to carpool to work with co-workers. Walk, bike or take public transportation whenever possible. You’ll save money on car maintenance, fuel and more, and you’ll be healthier because of it.

#5 Increase Fuel Efficiency

Try to find ways to increase your car’s fuel efficiency. Don’t keep heavy cargo or bike carriers on the car when you’re not using them. When driving in heavy traffic, avoid aggressive starts and stops.
